Google Talk for iPod Touch

July 3, 2008 - Google has just released a new version of Google Talk instant messaging application for the iPod touch and iPhone.

Google Talk for iPod TouchYou just need to head to www.google.com/talk, sign in and start chatting with friends. You might want to put a bookmark on your desktop for easy access in the future. Google Talk runs entirely in the browser so there’s no need to download or install anything.

However, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on your iPod, the application needs to be open in the Apple’s Safari browser.

“When you navigate away to another browser window or application, your status will be changed to ‘unavailable’ and your Google Talk session will be restarted when you return,” says Google engineer Adam Connors.

The impact of IM isn’t likely to be immediate because text messaging is easy to use and works across carriers, whereas not all mobile phone users have instant messaging accounts or use compatible IM clients.

AT&T subscribers looking to save a few extra dollars per month could combine GTalk and the integrated free AOL Instant Messenger client to chat with friends rather than pay for the AT&T SMS plan.

Feature wise, the Google team responsible for the service made sure you can easily select people you want to chat (add them to ‘quicklist’), search contacts and manage multiple conversations.
